the fair-weather friend… and the poor climate family

Possibly it’s endemic to American WASP families, but there is a sense that when everything is going okay—they may check in to make sure that such is the status—there is no need for much interaction. It’s only when things are bad that they care to get involved. Many of the family members may have a genuine wish to return things to a state of goodness, which is hard to fault them for, though there is both a sense that they are more managerial than familial, and that they can’t be bothered for things to be otherwise.
